About Mesoyios Research Center

The Mesoyios Research Center (MRC) is a multidisciplinary research and innovation organization dedicated to generating knowledge, fostering innovation and developing practical solutions for sustainable, resilient and regenerative development.

Our work connects research, education, businesses, public authorities and local communities, transforming scientific knowledge into practical actions that improve quality of life, strengthen local economies, support entrepreneurship and protect natural and cultural heritage.

While the Center develops interdisciplinary research and international collaborations, it maintains a distinctive commitment to the needs of rural and mountain communities, using the Troodos Mountains and rural Cyprus as an important environment for applied research, experimentation and innovation.

The Center builds upon a development philosophy that recognizes mountain and rural territories not simply as areas facing disadvantages, but as places possessing valuable human, natural, cultural and entrepreneurial resources that can become foundations for sustainable development.

Particular areas of expertise include regenerative tourism, sustainable hospitality, rural development, experience design, family entrepreneurship, SME innovation, digital transformation, environmental sustainability, community development and territorial innovation.

Inspired by the principles of People – Planet – Prosperity, the Mesoyios Research Center promotes development models in which economic progress, environmental stewardship and community wellbeing reinforce one another.

Working with universities, research institutions, businesses, local authorities, community councils, development organizations and international partners, MRC provides a platform through which research can respond directly to real societal and territorial challenges.

Through applied research, education, innovation and community engagement, the Center seeks to improve quality of life, strengthen family entrepreneurship and SMEs, create opportunities for young people, support sustainable economic development and contribute to the environmental and cultural regeneration of the places in which we work.

Our vision is to establish the Mesoyios Research Center as a leading Mediterranean research and innovation center recognized for its ability to connect scientific excellence with the real needs of communities.

We envision thriving rural and mountain territories where people can live, work, create businesses, raise families and build their future, supported by innovation, education, entrepreneurship and sustainable use of local resources.

Starting from Cyprus and the Troodos Mountains, MRC aspires to develop and demonstrate models of community-centered innovation that can be transferred to rural and mountain regions throughout the Mediterranean and Europe.

1. Advance Applied Research & Innovation

Conduct high-quality interdisciplinary research addressing real economic, social, environmental and technological challenges.

The Center will place particular emphasis on applied research, where knowledge can be tested and translated into practical solutions.

2. Improve Community Quality of Life

Develop research and innovation initiatives that contribute directly to improving the economic and social wellbeing of communities.

Research will examine issues such as:

  • employment and income opportunities;
  • access to skills and education;
  • demographic challenges;
  • youth retention;
  • community services;

3. Support Family Entrepreneurship & Rural SMEs

Strengthen family businesses, micro-enterprises, SMEs and local entrepreneurs that form the economic backbone of rural communities.

The Center will support enterprises through:

  • mentoring;
  • digital transformation;
  • experience development;
  • sustainability;

The objective is not simply to create more businesses, but to create stronger locally rooted businesses that generate employment and retain economic value within their communities.

4. Advance Regenerative & Sustainable Tourism

Develop and test new approaches to tourism that contribute positively to destinations rather than simply consuming their resources.

Tourism should help regenerate:

local economies, communities, culture, heritage, landscapes and ecosystems.

MRC will therefore research and promote regenerative tourism, sustainable hospitality, experience-based tourism, cultural tourism, nature-based tourism and community-led destination development.

5. Build Skills, Knowledge & Local Capacity

Provide education, lifelong learning, professional development, reskilling and upskilling that respond to the changing needs of communities and businesses.

Special attention will be given to developing skills in:

  • tourism and hospitality;
  • entrepreneurship;
  • sustainability;
  • digital technologies;

  • project development.
6. Support Digital Transformation & Smart Communities

Investigate and promote technologies that can improve the competitiveness of businesses and quality of life within rural communities.

This includes digital tools, artificial intelligence, data systems, smart tourism applications, digital storytelling and new technologies supporting local businesses and public services.

7. Strengthen Participatory Community Development

Promote development models in which communities actively participate in identifying problems, designing solutions and evaluating results.

MRC will encourage co-creation, Living Labs, participatory research and multi-stakeholder collaboration, ensuring that development is undertaken with communities rather than simply for communities.

8. Support Evidence-Based Policy

Produce research, data, monitoring systems and policy recommendations that support local authorities, community councils, development organizations and national institutions in designing more effective policies.

The Center will act as a bridge between:

Community Experience → Scientific Evidence → Policy → Action.

9. Build European & International Partnerships

Develop strategic partnerships with universities, research centers, businesses, public authorities, rural networks and international organizations.

Through programmes such as Horizon Europe, Erasmus+, Interreg and other European initiatives, MRC will connect Cyprus and its communities with international knowledge, innovation and good practices.

What Makes Mesoyios Research Center Different?

Unlike traditional research institutes that focus primarily on the production of academic knowledge and publications, the Mesoyios Research Center begins with the real challenges faced by communities, families and local businesses.

Family businesses are often at the heart of rural communities: hotels, restaurants, farms, wineries, workshops, traditional producers, tourism enterprises and other small businesses preserve local knowledge, provide employment and keep economic value within the community.

The Center therefore uses research, innovation, education, mentoring and international cooperation to help these enterprises become more resilient, competitive, sustainable and capable of passing successfully to the next generation.

Communities as Living Laboratories

The Mesoyios Research Center considers rural and mountain communities to be Living Laboratories for Research and Innovation.

Within these Living Labs, researchers work alongside residents, businesses, community councils, students, public authorities and civil society organizations.

Ideas can therefore be:

identified → researched → co-designed → tested → evaluated → improved → replicated.

The Troodos Mountains provide an important environment for this approach because they combine tourism, hospitality, agriculture, local production, entrepreneurship, cultural heritage, natural ecosystems and active rural communities.

Through its cooperation with the Troodos Network, the Center can connect scientific research with real community projects and thematic initiatives.

This relationship forms part of a wider innovation ecosystem in which the Troodos Network provides the communities and Living Laboratory environment, Mesoyios College contributes education, skills and human capital, and the Mesoyios Research Center contributes research, innovation, evaluation and policy knowledge.
